Doom: The Dark Ages is a beast of a game, built on the idTech8 engine, and it’s gonna push your PC hard with ray-tracing required even for the bare minimum. Here’s the rundown on PC system requirements and how to tweak graphics settings for different rigs.
System Requirements
Minimum (1080p, 60 FPS, Low Quality Settings):
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-10700K (8 cores/16 threads, Zen 2 or 10th Gen)
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super or AMD RX 6600 (8GB VRAM, ray-tracing capable)
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 100GB NVMe SSD (no spinning drives allowed)
OS: Windows 10/11 64-bit
Notes: Gets you 1080p at 60 FPS on low settings. Ray tracing is non-negotiable.
Recommended (1440p, 60 FPS, High Quality Settings):
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X or Intel Core i7-12700K (8 cores/16 threads, Zen 3 or 12th Gen)
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD RX 6800 (10GB VRAM, ray-tracing capable)
RAM: 32GB
Storage: 100GB NVMe SSD
OS: Windows 10/11 64-bit
Notes: Aims for 1440p at 60 FPS with high settings.
Ultra 4K (2160p, 60 FPS, Ultra Quality Settings):
CPU: Same as recommended (Ryzen 7 5700X or Core i7-12700K)
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4080 or AMD RX 7900 XT (16GB VRAM, ray-tracing capable)
RAM: 32GB
Storage: 100GB NVMe SSD
OS: Windows 10/11 64-bit
Notes: Hits 4K at 60 FPS on ultra. Path tracing support is coming later via an update.
Graphics Settings Optimization
Here’s how to dial in the settings for your hardware. Exact sliders (like texture quality or shadow detail) aren’t fully spelled out yet, but these tips are based on idTech patterns and community advice.
Low-End Systems (Minimum Specs, e.g., RTX 2060 Super, RX 6600):
Resolution: 1080p
Texture Quality: Medium (to save VRAM)
Shadows: Low
Ray Tracing: Low or bare minimum (can’t turn it off, so tweak intensity if possible)
Anti-Aliasing: TAA for cleaner edges
Post-Processing: Low (cut back on motion blur, film grain)
Tips: Shut down background apps to free up power. Grab the latest GPU drivers (NVIDIA/AMD) to avoid hiccups. You might see some frame drops in big fights.
Mid-Range Systems (Recommended Specs, e.g., RTX 3080, RX 6800):
Resolution: 1440p
Texture Quality: High
Shadows: Medium to High
Ray Tracing: Medium
Anti-Aliasing: TAA
Post-Processing: Medium (turn on sharpening for crispness, around 40-50% like in Doom Eternal)
Tips: Use NVIDIA DLSS 4 or AMD FSR to boost frames without tanking visuals. Get a solid CPU cooler (like Corsair Nautilus 360 RS) for long sessions.
High-End Systems (Ultra Specs, e.g., RTX 4080, RX 7900 XT):
Resolution: 2160p (4K)
Texture Quality: Ultra
Shadows: Ultra
Ray Tracing: High (crank it up for path tracing later, for better lighting and reflections)
Anti-Aliasing: TAA or DLSS 4 (Quality mode)
Post-Processing: High (go all-in on gore and destruction effects)
Tips: DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation is a game-changer for 4K. Keep an eye on temps, as ultra settings hit your system hard. Path tracing will be a resource hog when it drops.
Additional Notes
Ray Tracing and Path Tracing: You need a ray-tracing GPU—older cards like GTX or AMD Vega are out of luck. Path tracing, which ups the ante on lighting and reflections, is coming post-launch and will demand even more power. NVIDIA RTX 50 series (like the RTX 5090) will eat this up, supposedly hitting 4K at 210 FPS on ultra with path tracing.
DLSS 4 Support: Only for RTX 50 series cards, DLSS 4 with Multi-Frame Generation makes high resolutions smoother.
Storage: The 100GB NVMe SSD is a must for fast loading. Old-school HDDs will choke.
Accessibility and Difficulty Sliders: Not graphics-related, but you can tweak parry windows, game speed, and resources, which might lighten the load on weaker systems by slowing down the action.
