Gameplay[]

Friday Night Funkin' sees the protagonist, "Boyfriend", progress through multiple levels, known as "weeks" each of which contains three songs. Each week, the player will face a new opponent or opponents. During gameplay, the opponent will sing a series of notes (represented by arrows), which the player must imitate by using the arrow keys or the keys W, A, S, and D. Later songs introduce more complex patterns, with the player's pattern occasionally differing from the opponent's or both singers performing a duet. Each week, the player can choose one of three difficulties: Easy, Normal, or Hard. As the difficulty increases, The speed of incoming arrows increases, and arrow patterns become more complex. The player's high score for each week on each difficulty is tracked and displayed in the upper right hand corner of the week selection screen.

There are two modes of play in the game. In "Storymode," the player plays through an entire week, including any cutscenes. The story mode structure and any cutscenes are ignored in "Freeplay," and the player can play any individual song on its own.

In the newest update, the WeekEnd 1 update, there have been a LOT of added features. This new "WeekEnd" revolves instead around Pico, not Boyfriend. This week introduces the idea of more than 3 songs per week (or technically weekend). There are now 5 options of difficulty instead of 3. Those being Easy, Normal, Hard, Erect, and Nightmare (Though Erect and Nightmare are not selectable in Storymode). It also put a LOT of new ERECT remixes in the newly updated Freeplay menu.

Reception[]

Friday Night Funkin' is commonly attributed to increased site traffic on Newgrounds, and is often credited with revitalizing interest in the site. Due to its immense popularity, author ninjamuffin99 became the first user on Newgrounds to amass 100K fans, and it is the first submission on Newgrounds to pass 50 million views.

Though the game is commonly praised, it is also considered fairly controversial amongst older users, with many finding the game's obsessive fan culture annoying due to constant drama within the game's modding scene and what some perceive as an overabundance of low quality fan-submissions based upon the game. Some users have claimed that due to mass-migration from Twitter users interested in the game, site culture has deteriorated significantly, with events such as Clock Day being "killed" by FNF's fandom.
